GUIDE FOR INSTALLATION, OPERATION, INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, & RECHARGING OF THE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS (STORED PRESSURE TYPE)

ABOUT :

Fire extinguishers must be serviced in order to operate properly between the time intervals stipulated and also to avoid a potential hazard to person in its vicinity or to those who operate or recharge the extinguishers. This guide lays down the recommendation for the intended Installation, Operation, Inspection, Maintenance, and Recharging of the extinguisher.


SUITABILITY OF PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER

Fire Extinguisher suitability is based on the extinguishing media. Refer following tabel shows suitability based on type of media :

INSTALLATION 

  • Inspect the Extinguisher for it's completeness of supply and check with packing and dispatch documents before installation
  • Check the Extinguisher for any damage in transit and also check the stamp of approval before installation.  The seal and tamper indicators are not broken or missing.
  • Fire Extinguisher should be installed in designated location without obstructions.
  • Pressure should be readable to indicate operable pressure range and full of extinguishing media.
      Maintain the register for data like data of initial charging, next due date of refilling, serial number etc.

 

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Keep the extinguisher upright.
  • Remove safety pin.
  • Break seal only in case of fire.
  • Keep away from heat.
  • Do not rely partially used or discharges extinguisher.
  • Check pressure gauge periodically
Approach as near as possible to the fire & Aim at the base of fire.


INSPECTION INSTRUCTIONS

Fire Extinguisher shall be checked to ensure following :

  • The seals and tamper indicators are not broken or missing.
  • It is full (by weighing or lifting).
  • It is not obviously damaged, corroded, leaking or has clogged nozzle.
It's pressure gauge reading or indicator is in the operable range or position.


MAINTENANCE 

  • Examine and verify that pressure gauge is working properly for indicating internal pressure of the extinguisher
  • Examine extinguisher body externally. Damaged or corroded extinguisher should be replaced.
Weigh the extinguisher to check its contents and compare it with mass recorded on the cylinder. In case of loss of more than 10 percent, the extinguisher should be sent for recharging.


RECHARGING 

  • Recharge the extinguisher after any use.
  • Recharge the Extinguisher as per manufacturer's recommendation.
  • Replace the extinguisher with same class and at least equal rating in case of out of service.
  • Recharge the extinguisher with mass as specified on the label.
  • Perform leak test on Stored Pressure and self expelling types of Fire Extinguishers.


WARNING AND CAUTION

  • Fire Extinguisher must be completely depressurized before any attempt is made to remove the valve for Maintenance, Hydro Test or Recharging
  • Never has any part of your body over the extinguisher while removing the valve assembly.
  • Do not puncture the extinguisher body.
  • Keep the extinguisher in cool place.
  • Maintenance, Servicing and recharging shall be performed by trained person.
  • Stored Pressure type Fire Extinguishers shall be pressurized only to charging pressure specified on the FE nameplate.
  • Do not convert Fire Extinguisher from one type to another.
